Lecture for the Middlesex County Historical Society

  • Greater Middletown Military Museum 200 Walnut Grove Road Middletown, CT, 06457 United States (map)

29th Connecticut Colored Regiment

On February 29th, 2024 at 6pm, John Mills will be giving an in-perwson lecture on Connecticut's Colored Regiments during the Civil War. The event will be co-hosted by the Middlesex County Historical Society and the Greater Middletown Military Museum.

The Militia Act of 1862 made it legal for African American men to enlist in any United States military or naval service, leading to the creation of Connecticut’s 29th Colored Infantry Regiment. During his presentation, Mills will delve into the lives and experiences of some of the men who enlisted in the 29th Rgt., explore the current understanding of them, and challenge how the nation recognizes their unique sacrifices today.

This will be an in-person lecture occurring at the Greater Middletown Military Museum in Middletown. A registration link has not yet been established. We will share it here once it is available.
