Remembering Connecticut’s Colored Regiments: Film Screenings & Discussion

On February 4th, 2024 at 1pm, the Avon Historical Society will be hosting an event celebrating Connecticut’s Colored Regiments during the Civil War. The event will occur at the Avon Senior Center in Avon, CT.

The event will include a screening of the 15 minute documentary “The Connecticut 29th” written and produced in 2023 by Berlin Equity Action Team. The documentary includes a brief history of the 29th, 30th and 31st Connecticut Colored Infantry during the Civil War. Christopher Barlow of the Berlin Equity Action Team will provide background about the making of this film which won “Best CT Film” at the Mystic Film Festival.

It will also include the screening of portions of a documentary about the 29th Connecticut written and produced in 2020 by John Noone, retired CT National Guardsman, for the Connecticut National Guard. This documentary is a narration of “Out of the Briars,” written in 1910 by Alexander Newton who served in the 29th Connecticut.

John Mills will then moderated a discussion to round out the evening.
